Sorrento Redo: My Bucket List Day Trip to Pompeii, Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast

Pompeii BookWithSofia

Some trips are meant to be slow… and some are just too special to pass up—even if they’re a little fast-paced.

This was one of those days.

I recently did a day tour to Pompeii, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast, and while it’s not my usual travel style to see several places in one day, this experience reminded me why this part of Italy is firmly on so many bucket lists.

And if you’re wondering whether you should do it too—the answer is yes… but with a few insider tips I’ll share below.

A Quick Note on Travel Style (and Why This Trip Was Different)

At this stage in my life, I prefer to travel slower—really soaking in each destination instead of rushing from one landmark to another.

But this trip was a little different.

I was traveling with my son and his school group, so I worked around their schedule—not mine. And honestly? It turned out to be a fantastic day.

Stop 1: Pompeii – History Brought to Life

Visiting Pompeii is one of those experiences that stays with you.

The guided tour made all the difference. The pace was comfortable, and our guide did an excellent job bringing the ruins to life—without overwhelming us.

There was:

  • Time to explore
  • Plenty of photo opportunities
  • Bathroom and rest breaks (which matter more than people admit!)

We also had lunch here, which was practical since time in Sorrento would be limited.

Tip: If you’re short on time, combining Pompeii with a guided tour is the best way to truly understand what you’re seeing.

The Drive: Pompeii to Sorrento (The Real Highlight)

I’ll be honest—the drive alone is worth this trip.

Clear blue skies, a perfect breeze, and views that feel almost unreal.

We could see:

  • Mount Vesuvius in the distance
  • The island of Capri across the water
  • The stunning coastline stretching endlessly

It was that perfect mix of warm sun and cool coastal air—the kind that makes you pause and just take it all in.

A Sweet Stop: Limoncello Experience

Before reaching Sorrento, we stopped for a limoncello tasting.

Now, I don’t usually drink much when I travel with my children —but I couldn’t resist trying a limoncello slushy (no alcohol), and it was absolutely worth it. Refreshing, light, and perfect for the setting.

Final Stop: Sorrento

By the time we reached Sorrento, I was tired—but in the best way.

Instead of rushing around, I did exactly what I recommend my clients do:
I slowed down, sat back, and enjoyed the view.

Because Sorrento isn’t a place to rush.

It’s a place to feel.

Would I Do This Again? Yes… But Differently

This day trip is excellent—especially if you’re short on time.

But if I were planning it for myself (or for my clients), here’s how I’d do it:

My Ideal Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Explore Pompeii properly
  • Day 2: Stay in Sorrento and relax by the sea
  • Day 3+: Visit Positano, Capri, and Naples (Napoli) by ferry and coastal drives

Staying overnight in Sorrento or Positano is the biggest upgrade I’d recommend. It allows you to enjoy Amalfi at your own pace.

For this trip, I personally used GetYourGuide to book the tour and Booking.com for my stay. Both were easy to use and worked really well, which is why I’m happy to recommend them.

Until next time.
